Joris Van de Moortel (Oostakker, 1983, lives and works in Antwerp) can not be summarized in just a few words. This consistent oeuvre should be experienced with all senses. In a gallery, museum or art platform (such as Be-Part), during a performance, on vinyl or CD, in a publication such as the series Cylinder. He develops his production around the remnants of his performances and elements that populate his daily life, which he transforms into sculptures, installations and 3D collages. Joris Van de Moortel improvises, provokes, creates and destroys, to recreate afterwards. From the same approach, his work is compared with the provocative attitude of Mike Kelley and the destructiveness Steven Parrino. But even so, one could refer to influences of Sonic Youth, The Stooges, Paul McCarthy, Jason Rhoades and Patti Smith. The work of Joris Van de Moortel is process-oriented and poised between order and chaos. He usually starts from the performance, where the refiner and the poetic dimension is strongly present. Not only the materials with which he works (wood, aluminum, wax, bronze, polyurethane ...) are interesting, the way in which he handles these materials is extremely fascinating.
